Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start training at AFS Wing Chun?
You’re welcome to join us anytime at our gym in Newcastle! There’s no need to contact us first – simply arrive a few minutes early, introduce yourself to Sifu Paul O’Neal and/or Dean, and get started. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out through our contact page.
What can I expect from a Wing Chun class?
At AFS Wing Chun, we offer a relaxed, ego-free training environment inspired by Grandmaster Ip Ching and the Wing Chun Athletic Association. Classes follow a structured plan, but we also provide open training sessions where students can practice and ask questions.
Unlike some traditional martial arts, we do not enforce a strict etiquette system. Instead, we focus on respect and courtesy toward instructors, fellow students, and the training space.
What should I wear to Wing Chun classes?
Wear comfortable, flexible clothing – t-shirts and tracksuit bottoms work perfectly. Many Wing Chun practitioners prefer indoor footwear, such as clean trainers or martial arts training shoes, but this is optional.
I’m unfit or overweight – can I still train?
Absolutely! Wing Chun Kung Fu is accessible to all fitness levels. Training sessions include light to moderate exercises, with intensity increasing based on your comfort level. If you have any injuries or limitations, let your instructor know in advance.
I have experience in other martial arts or Wing Chun styles – can I still join?
Yes! Prior experience in martial arts can help you progress faster. However, when you train at AFS Wing Chun in Newcastle, you’ll be introduced to Sifu Paul O’Neal’s teaching style, as passed down from Grandmaster Ip Ching. We encourage an open-minded approach, free from ego, to help you fully integrate into our training system.
Is Wing Chun effective for self-defence?
Yes. Wing Chun is one of the most practical martial arts for self-defence. It focuses on efficiency, economy of motion, and close-range techniques to neutralize threats quickly. Our structured training ensures students develop real-world defensive skills.
Can I train if I have no martial arts experience?
Yes! Wing Chun is ideal for beginners. Our step-by-step teaching method ensures new students learn the fundamentals at their own pace with personalized guidance.
Do you offer Wing Chun classes for children?
We welcome students aged 16 and above to maintain a focused, professional training environment for mature learners.
What makes AFS Wing Chun different from other martial arts schools in Newcastle?
At AFS Wing Chun, we offer an authentic Wing Chun Kung Fu experience, taught by Sifu Paul O’Neal, who trained directly in Hong Kong under both Grandmasters Ip Ching and Ip Chun. This direct lineage ensures our teachings are rooted in tradition and passed down through one of the most respected families in Wing Chun. We maintain a focus on practical self-defence and personal development.
How long does it take to learn Wing Chun?
The journey to proficiency in Wing Chun is unique for everyone. While it typically takes around a year to reach an intermediate level and start applying the core techniques effectively, it can take about 4 years to become highly skilled. Mastery of Wing Chun is a lifelong pursuit, requiring continuous practice and refinement. Your progress will depend on individual effort and consistency.
Do you have a grading system?
At AFS Wing Chun, we do not follow a traditional grading system. In Chinese martial arts, formal gradings are generally not a focus, as they are more commonly associated with Western martial arts schools. Instead, we emphasize progress through skill acquisition, with personal growth and self-defence abilities being the key markers of advancement. Each student’s development is carefully guided based on their unique journey.
